This was our first time in southern Italy, and let me tell you — it felt very different! I've heard that most Italians who immigrated to the U.S. were from southern Italy, and it makes a lot of sense. Most of the food we know as Italian is southern Italian, and there's a bit more of a New Jersey vibe going on down there.
